Police arrested Paul J. Durgin, 28 of Sandwich, in connection with a hit-and-run that critically injured an Onset firefighter.

An arrest has been made following a hit-and-run that critically injured a 25-year-old Onset firefighter who was responding to an emergency call during Friday’s nor’easter.

Paul J. Durgin, 28, of Sandwich, was arrested at the Knights Inn motel in Barnstable. Wareham Police received a tip through the department’s “Text-A-Tip” application, which led detectives to Barnstable. The program allows the public to provide police with information anonymously.

Durgin allegedly struck firefighter Marc Granato, an Upton resident and three-year veteran of the department, and then drove off. Onset Fire Department officials report that Granato is currently in stable condition. According to Granato’s social media posts, he is a 2017 graduate of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy with a bachelor’s degree in emergency management.

Granato was responding to an emergency call on Cranberry Highway, near the Continental Marina in East Wareham, at approximately 7 p.m. on March 2. Firefighters were working to secure the area as wind blew sheet metal siding off of the Continental Marina’s boat storage facility.

Wareham EMS and Bourne EMS responded and transported the critically-injured Granato to Rhode Island Hospital after the crash.

Onset Fire Chief Ray Goodwin praised Bourne for their assistance.

“Bourne went above and beyond the call of duty to help us out,” said Goodwin.

After the crash, police were told that the car that struck Granato was a damaged, gray Subaru hatchback. Police sought the public's help in locating the suspect.

According to police, Durgin’s Subaru Forester was located at the motel after they received tips from the public. Police then obtained an arrest warrant for Durgin.

Durgin is charged with the following: leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident - personal injury, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (to wit a motor vehicle.)

Durgin was previously arrested for drug offenses. In Sept. 2107 he was arrested for possession of heroin and other related offenses, as was Kristin J. Hayes, 27, of Pembroke.

Motel has a whopping 1 STAR rating??? With scumbag guests, i'm surprised it's not much higher. Well, at least they got free publicity. Even scumbags need a place to sleep.
