A swing and a hit on youth softball opening day

Apr 21, 2024

The singing of the National Anthem and a shout of “Play ball!” kicked off the 2024 season of Wareham Girls Softball on Sunday, April 21.

The program offers girls in kindergarten through eighth grade recreational play in the spring and travel and tournament teams in the summer and fall.

Audrey, 11, said it was her first year playing softball, though she had three years of experience with a basketball program.

Audrey said she looked forward to being a better hitter — she doesn’t like the ringing feeling of the bat, and got a pair of gloves to help.

Evalyn, 12, has been playing since kindergarten.

“It is something I like doing, I’m used to it and it’s something I look forward to,” she said.

Beside the play of the game, opening day featured an inflatable obstacle course, laser tag, snow cones and face painting, among other attractions.

Lydia, 9, got a shell-themed design on her face because she likes the ocean.

Maya, 10, got an octopus on one side of her face and a soccer ball on the other. Octopuses are her favorite type of animal, and she used to play soccer, so she thought the two would go well together, she said.
