The Board of Health has deemed Agawam Mill Pond unsafe for swimming due to an alga bloom.

The board identified the algae as a cyanbacteria bloom which is potentially harmful to both people and pets. Swimming at the pond is now restricted until further notice and pets should not be allowed to drink the water. Anyone who comes into contact with the contaminated water is advised to rinse off afterwards.

The board was first notified of the bloom on Sunday, Aug. 5. The State Department of Public Health was unable to sample the algae bloom due to budget cuts, leaving its severity unknown.

Additional information on algae blooms can be found at www.mass.gov/dph/algae.

Quite a few years ago, the Selectmen closed down the Clean Water Committee stating that it was a duplication of committees.  And now you see what a mistake that was right here.  Clean Water Committee also researched the campground then known as Yogi Bear and found many areas of interest containing raw sewage, unclean swimming water, no permits for certain actions and bldgs. on the properties and much more that would disgust citizens of our Town.  Clean Water Committee was helping to find areas like these to protect our citizens and now the Clean Water Committee is no longer welcome to help this Town.  It was disbanded without a warming or a hearing. Never heard or saw the other water committee take action on any of the situations mentioned in my post and here we have NITROGEN, again, causing hoax for us  And a board that thinks they know all about everything.

Hey Sphere, don't look now but we've had a Republican governor for 4 years. But feel free to blame everything that goes wrong in your life on the "liberal scum" of the world. Sad.

And JJones, that clean water committee got canned because it was only an advisory board and it went about acting like it had legal authority. It was out of control as I recall. We have a Department of Health. Give them your evidence and let them take care of it. They have the legal authority.

Baker is no republican, I doubt that he is even a man

Does that comment make YOU feel more manly? LOL

Not really it they are based on my observations and her actions.

$1.4 million for dirt clean-up at Tremont Nail, but no money for algae testing? Sphere is correct about Baker. He's a R.I.N.O and like our rep, Susan Williams Gifford, is gutless. Both refused to campaign for the Republican Party candidate in the 2016 election.  And the local Rep. had the gall to ask town Republicans to hold up a sign for her in 2016??
