It was smaller than usual, but the Kiwanis Club of Bourne/Wareham’s fifth annual 5K delivered a good run for 15 participants on Sunday, June 24.

Due to a glitch on the race’s website, many potential runner were unable to sign up, said Bill Jenkins, governor of the New England & Bermuda district of Kiwanis. By the time organizers realized there was a problem, it was too late to get the word out, he said.

In past years, 30 to 50 people participated in the race, held at the A.D Makepeace Co. headquarters at Tihonet Road.

Despite the setback, Eleanor Weller, the local Kiwanis chapter’s president, said organizers would come up with ideas to increase participation next year.

“We’re happy that all of these people came out today to support us,” said Weller. “It’s become an annual tradition, and this is a beautiful venue. We want it to grow.”

Proceeds from the event will support Wareham High School’s Key Club and the middle school’s Builders Club. Both are student-directed clubs focused on community service in-line with the Kiwanis’ service-oriented mission. The school clubs have done projects such as knitting scarves for the homeless and donating food to students in need.

On Sunday, members of the school clubs provided race support by keeping time, manning check points and encouraging runners.

“The Kiwanis Club has supported us through scholarships, providing transportation to events and in many other ways,” said Col. Matt Stanton, the high school club’s advisor. “This is our small way of giving back.”
