An East Wareham man has been charged with attempted murder after he allegedly attacked a woman with a hammer, doused her with fluid, then burned down the home both had been inside, according to prosecutors.

Mondel Johnson, 40, of 18 Barker Road, was arrested in Fall River on April 5 by Wareham Police detectives, Massachusetts State Police and police officers from the Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section, Fall River and New Bedford.

On April 6, he was arraigned in Wareham District Court and held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing. That hearing is scheduled for April 11, said Plymouth County District Attorney spokeswoman Beth Stone. The dangerousness hearing will determine whether or not the defendant poses a “substantial risk” of committing a felony using force.

Johnson is accused of setting a fire that destroyed the home at 36 Restful Lane early on March 29. According to court documents, Johnson and the woman, who police did not identify, entered the home a few hours after midnight to use drugs. The home, which had been condemned weeks earlier due to storm damage, was unoccupied.

Prosecutors said the woman asked Johnson to use his cell phone for light, but he refused. He then allegedly attacked her with a hammer, doused her with what she believed to be cooking oil, kicked her until she was unconscious and then set the house on fire.

"(The victim) stated the male began lighting pieces of newspaper and began throwing them at her," court documents stated.

Prosecutors said the woman ran out of the house after waking up and sought help. The victim was then taken to Tobey Hospital for treatment and released. For several hours after the fire, authorities were unsure of the woman's whereabouts and searched the charred remains of the house.

According to neighbors, the address had a reputation as a "drug house." Elias Broufas, who lives directly across the street, noted the house was rundown and had broken windows and trash strewn about. Since moving in almost a year ago, he said that there have been multiple overdoses reported at the proprty and illegal activity.

Johnson was charged with: attempted murder, arson of a dwelling (house) and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

Wareham Police expressed appreciation for the cooperation of the multiple police agencies as well as the Wareham Fire Department.

Wow...this is hardcore stuff!  Not the typical nonsense.  It's like something from a movie.

When this fire was first reported there was an "unaccounted" person.  A search revealed that nobody was in the house.  It was good news. The community was relieved at that discovery. Were they looking for him?  If so, it would have been better news if they found his charred remains buried in the rubble!

So glad they apprehended this thug

Why not release the names of all involved. I'm sure they are upstanding and fine contributing members to society.

Birds of a feather do flock together!  Even so, she's still the the victim and had a really bad day on the 29th so they're giving her a break.  The neighbors simply helped a person in need and certainly don't want their names to be associated with this disgrace.  His name is the most important.

Holy Smokes , Crazy Crazy Crazy ...  the Magnet went into Overload on this one ....

So were they trespassing then? The house was reportedly abandoned and condemned due to a tree falling on it in the storms. The owner was not staying in the home, so these guys must be been squatting there or something?

Excellent work by the investigators!!!

We have our fair share of rap star wannabes.  Maybe he wanted to be like Eminem?

Here's some lyrics from duet "Love the Way You Lie" by Eminem and Rihanna.
Eminem:
I'm tired of the games, I just want her back, I know I'm a liar
If she ever tries to leave again
I'm a tie her to the bed and set this house on fire
Rihanna:
Just gonna stand there and watch me burn
But that's alright, because I like the way it hurts
Just gonna stand there and hear me cry

But that's alright, because I love the way you lie
I love the way you lie.

A little Beck

"You get a parking violation
And a maggot on your sleeve
So shave your face
With some mace in the dark
Saving all your food stamps
And burning down the trailer park"

He's a loser baby

Talking Heads ?

Hold tight wait till the party's over
Hold tight We're in for nasty weather
There has got to be a way
Burning down the house

All right seeing as we're easing the reality of this awful story by dating ourselves with music, here's another from 1985 when Disco was transforming to early Hip Hop:

Who recalls this old school favorite?

by Rockmaster Scott and the Dynamic Three

Let's make some noise (Ho)
Let's make some noise - come on
The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire
(We don't need no water, let the mother!@#$%^ burn)
(Burn, mother!@#$%^, burn)
The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire
(We don't need no water, let the mother!@#$%^ burn)
(Burn, mother!@#$%^, burn)

The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire
Say 'Ho' (Ho)
Say 'Ho' (Ho)

Swifts, didn't we say from the get go that there was an accelerant used here? Yup, that thing burned like a pile of kindling. You could tell by the pictures.

Release the victim's name? And victim blaming and shaming? The owners of record are listed at that address. Do you know how long it took us to get a home condemned In Onset? Plenty of squatters over here in abandoned homes and campers. All of this while firefighters risked everything thinking a person was inside (and we have no chief of police on the job now.) Let's see if he gets bailed and where he goes. Nothing about this is funny. Wareham has no domestic violence shelter, no addiction rehab. Just the underlying social ills.

Just watch ch5 if you need to know the girls name,it's out now.

Pretty sad that in watching the channel 4 news tonight not only was the top story about Wareham (the fire) but then the second story was about Wareham (the drug dealer going to jail for 8 years).  How sad is that?

Well Peaches as you know I played a firefighter on TV for many years :)   Few more weeks

Posted by: Knocked for six | Apr 06, 2018 19:33

WBTS, I thought you were going with disco inferno!

Posted by: Wareham By The Sea | Apr 06, 2018 21:46

Knocked - Disco Inferno...forgot about that one!  I also just remembered the newer version of The Roof is on Fire by Bloodhound Gang from the 90s.

Anyways, this is really sucky.  Like Curiouscat stated, Wareham is all over the big news about terrible things today.  Like many, I grew up in a Boston Suburb and vacationed here as a kid.  Then this place just sorta sucked me in and here I’ve lived for a couple decades.  Family and friends are all still scattered up and down the Irish Riviera.  Some of Wareham’s stupid bad news and stupid funny news makes the Patriot Ledger for all of them to see.  Now this hardcore stuff is all over the Boston papers and TV channels.  They’re all like “dude, are you still glad you moved down there?”  and “dude, how can so much ridiculous and horrible news come from one little town?”  I continue to defend it.  I say “yea but the boating is great and the ocean is warm...”. Hmmm, I’m beginning to wonder...

Don't forget the quahogging, and clamming .

Why do they need a dangerousness hearing ?? The guy broke into a house, kicked the girl into lala land. doused her with flammable liquid, and then set the house on fire.

thkng60@yahoo.com, WBTS,   you forgot getting ripped by box wine by the beach

You all forgot  Smoke on the water  :::    Smoke on the water, fire in the sky

Posted by: Wareham By The Sea | Apr 07, 2018 14:59

Swift's - box wine down Swifts!  Yea...reminds me of Boone's Farm ...3 bottles for $10... Back in college...fruity hangover in a bottle!

I just reread the updated article.  Oh boy!  More details to help paint an even worse picture in my mind!  Fire was the best thing that could have happened to that house!  I can think of a few dozen more  Wareham drug houses that could use a good fire!  I'm biting my tongue not to use a word that I'm not allowed to use anymore!  One simple word can be used to describe this whole debacle.

Oh yea, Smoke on the Water!  That's the #1 air guitar song of all times!

WBTS,  Yeah Boone's Farm but we were kids and drank that crap , These are 3 so called adults from Rose Point that use the Neck Parking lot as their private beach lounge out of their truck. Local Law Enforcement type see no problem with it . Rather bug a 14 year old kid on a mini bike..

People have asked me why I haven't moved down there fulltime. I live 15 minutes with two green lights from being in Downtown Boston. I rather live in the Big City with its problems then live in Wareham with its craziness.

Its kind of like the old saying "Its a nice place to visit , but I wouldn't want to live there"

Forgot the old OHIO PLAYERS song "FIRE"

It doesn't matter what the girls name is. If it was your child would you want her name spread out in papers. The Whole story is sooo awful.  And that man is not from Wareham and is a lunatic for what he did. And I hope he burns!!

Posted by: thkng60@yahoo.com | Apr 09, 2018 06:01

If it was your child??????????? She still broke in with him to do drugs, charge her with B&E.

Posted by: Wareham By The Sea | Apr 09, 2018 11:15

She is 27 and he is 40.  Both adults and both responsible for whatever sleazy late night drug related activities they choose to participate in. She should be charged with B&E.

However, she's much younger,  she has horrible judgement, she's someone's little girl, and she's young enough to hopefully turn herself around after this wake-up call.  Not releasing her name name locally wasn't unreasonable.   If you watched Channel 5 News you'd at least know her mother's name because they interviewed her.

Montana - He was from Wareham.  Maybe not recently but they never really leave.  Facebook is a powerful tool!  Just search his name.  He went to Upper Cape for Masonry.  He has two young children.  His photos actually show him once looking like a happy healthy father & friend.  Then the drugs and downward spiral began...  Disgusting!  His last post from August read:

I just realized this life sucks and I'm all done with it

Channel 5 gave the victims name out .. her mother was on tv calling her a good kid ... Kid really? 27 isn’t a kid lady
