A car drove through Five Star Gateway Gas Wednesday afternoon, sending one person to the hospital and another to jail as a 52-year-old East Taunton woman was arrested and charged with operating under the influence of alcohol.

According to Wareham Fire Department Assistant Chief John Kelley, one shopper in the gas station, located at 2537 Cranberry Highway, was injured when the driver of the car crashed into the building at approximately 12:30 p.m., going through the glass windows of the storefront. Chief of Police Kevin Walsh said the injury sustained was "minor."

The employee in the gas station at the time was uninjured.

The car's driver, Laurie Texeira, refused medical treatment and was given a sobriety test. Texeira was then handcuffed and escorted into the back of a police car. She was placed under arrest for operating under the influence, Walsh said.

According to a police press release, this was Texeira's second operating under the influence arrest. Police said Texeira was uninjured after the crash. She was released on her own recognizance on June 22 following an arraignment in Wareham District Court. Her next court date is scheduled for Aug. 10 for a pre-trial hearing.

The individual who was hurt while in the gas station was taken to the hospital, leaving his dog behind in his car. The dog was cared for by the Wareham Fire Department.

A building inspector arrived on the scene shortly after the incident and pronounced the building structurally sound enough to remove the car. The car was successfully removed from Gateway Gas at around 1:15 p.m. The gas station is shut down until further notice.

Shirley Andrews, who works next door to Gateway Gas, said she was in the gas station 15 minutes before the accident occurred purchasing a "doggone scratch ticket." Though Andrews did not witness the event, she said she felt lucky to have left the gas station in time to avoid it.

"Jesus take the wheel, that's all I say all the time," Andrews said.

Hopefully a speedy recovery to the innocent bystander... That car got driven all the way to the back of the store.

I kind of hope all those huge, fancy and expensive bongs got run over in their locked, lighted display cases!

Its 12:30 and she is wasted already? She must have been hanging with Bill or Billy or Mac or Buddy down by the Carwash burning some matches before this happened.

This happens all the time with parking in front of storefronts.  Bollards need to be added to the building code when parking is like this.

She's a beaut. Drunk at noon.  Could have killed somebody.  Wrecked someone's business.  What a loser.

Linda ,  maybe she was on her way to get one of those Bongs ...People ask why does Wareham attract these losers? That gas station is a prime example. Walk in there and the first thing you see are those shiny bongs . Please keep the stories of they are used for tobacco for your grandmother.i am with you Linda I hope they got smashed into pieces.Shame on the town leaders for allowing the sale of those things ....  Btw if that woman is 52 , then I am 16 .... LoL

Im with you all.  Drunk at 12:30?? Really?? Sad.  She's lucky she didn't kill someone.  And it's a shame these foreigners get to sell these expensive bongs in a fancy showcase.  I went there once for gas,  Will never go again.  Oh and by the way, Laurie Texeira from Tainton...stay in Taunton!!!

I forgot to note how perfectly she crashed.  Dead center of the gable. Can't make this stuff up...

Montana funny story I invited a friend down for the day always telling him wateham isn't as bad as its reputation. He comes down and the first place he stops is that place aka "House of Bongs " and the guy in there was trying to sell him one

Same here, every time I try to convince someone it isn't that bad they see or hear something that undermines my wishful thinking.  I still love it here.  I've just developed a way to make light of it.

Uuhh, is this the tunnel to cape bong ?

That place looks like a dump. I drive past it every day to go to work and have never considered getting gas there. Just go to the mobil station down the road. A little advice for the owners reseal your pavement and paint the damn place. If it looked decent I'm sure most would ignore the glassware.

You know I get a kick out of the selectmen in this town. They claim they want to make the town a better place but yet they let this place sell Bongs .. Too funny

I can't believe the comments here. I had to look on Google Map to see where this place was even located. This is not about the gas station. This is about the driver.  This is her second operating under the influence arrest. No where did I read that she had even been in the store or had anything to do with the store except driving through it. She could have just driven off the road and gas station was there instead of a pole or tree.  Even if they take away her license she will still drive.  It happens all the time.  She could have run into the Stop & Shop or any building in Wareham or anyplace else. It's like blaming a rape victim for being raped and not the rapist. Don't blame the store but blame the stupid driver.  Someone could have gotten killed. That was a dumb comparison and I have compassion for anyone that has been through rape or any kind of domestic violence but it gets the point across.

And Swifts_Sheriff, you bring a friend to Wareham and the first place he goes to is the "aka "House of Bongs."  You could say it says a lot about you and your friend.  But that would be the same thing being said here about the store. Your friend going to that shop has nothing to do about you but about your friend.  I don't know you and this is not to disrespect you. I'm only using this as an example so please don't take it the wrong way because that's not the way I meant it. I'm sure he went in there for some other reason but you can see how a story can get started.

You all have a nice safe weekend.

Zephyr, you are correct.  She could have crashed into anything and she could have killed someone no matter where she crashed.  She didn't veer off the road, miss all the pumps, and crash through the place.  She was there conducting business at a bong shop that also sells gas and then crashed through the place as she was either parking or leaving. Probably the "classic" I thought the brake was the gas story.  Aside from everything else, the irony is like something out of a movie. Only in Wareham does a drunk woman crash through a bong shop at noon.

sorry for the duplicate

Sound like Swift's friend went there unsuspectingly.  Mine have.  We invite friends and family down.  They get off the highway, pass through the pair of Gateway Lighthouses, and stop at Gateway Gas.  Seems like the two go hand in hand.  Instead of Gatorade they are welcomed with 6' bongs.  What says Welcome to Wareham any better?  Can't make it up...

Swifts, I'm 100% with you on the bongs. That's what we call that place in our house. The Bong Shop. Sad...... what's even sadder is that he can sell his shiny bongs no problem but we have a Board of Health that tells a shop owner what he is allowed to sell his cigars for. I'm call bull-poop! Sorry but that is pathetic.

Zephyr , He went into pay for gas and grab a soda ...
