BOURNE – The Wareham Gatemen (25-16-2) take on the Bourne Braves (17-25-1) for the final game of the regular season tonight at 6 p.m. at Doran Park.

Last night, the Gatemen defeated the Braves in the first of a home-and-home to end the regular season. Lael Lockhart Jr. and Jeremy Ydens hit two-run homers in the second and third innings respectively to give the Gatemen a 4-0 cushion early as the team would go on to win 6-1. Five different pitches threw for Wareham yesterday and Derek West recorded the win pitching a scoreless inning out of the pen.

“It’s just like the 42 others. You go out and compete. It’s always nice to win. We threw a lot of pitchers out there, kept them off balance. Pitching was our mainstay,” Sneddon said about yesterday’s game. “It’s nice to see Jeremy [Ydens] come out and hit his home run and Lock get his homer. We are going to need some of that punch coming down the end here.”

Currently, Wareham sits in first place in the West Division with 52 points while Hyannis trails the Gatemen by one point as the Harbor Hawks are in second place with 51 points.

Should the Gatemen win today or the Harbor Hawks lose, Wareham would clinch the number one seed in the division and would have home field advantage throughout the Western Division Playoffs. Additionally, Wareham would play the Cotuit Kettleers in round one as they are locked in as the four seed.

If Wareham loses today and Hyannis wins, the Harbor Hawks would overtake the Gatemen for first in the West. The Gatemen would then be the two seed and play the Falmouth Commodores in round one.

Aside from the importance of the game today for Wareham seeding wise, the game also has some historical relevance as well. If the Gatemen win today, they will have recorded their 26th win of the summer making them the most successful regular season Wareham team over the past 18 years.

The highest win total by a Gatemen team over the past 19 years was done so by 2000 club at the turn of the century.

In 2000, Wareham recorded 27 total regular season wins as the club was led by future pros like Nick Swisher, Ryan Theriot, Lance Cormier, and Mike Fontenot. If the Gatemen do not record win 26 today, they will be tied with the 2016 and 2001 Gatemen clubs who also had 25 wins.
