Incumbents, Bacchiocchi win Fire District races

Apr 13, 2024

The Wareham Fire District annual elections on Saturday, April 13 ended with incumbent Richard England maintaining his seat on the Board of Water Commissioners and incumbent Brian Crocker joined by Joyce Bacchiocchi on the Fire Prudential Committee.

Residents cast 408 total ballots in the election, voting through a drive-through system.

One seat was available on the Board of Water Commissioners and two were available on the Fire Prudential Committee.

Crocker took 219 votes in the Fire Prudential Committee race, and Bacchiocchi took 196. Challengers Steven Curry and Alan Slavin took 150 and 129 votes respectively.

Crocker was elected to the Fire Prudential Committee in 2021. Bacchiocchi currently serves on the School Committee and has a background in business administration, financing and human resources.

Curry has served on the Board of Assessors for 30 years; Slavin has served on the Select Board for 12 years.

Curry said he would like to stay involved in the district and wants to make sure the district gets a new fire station. “I was basically running to help out the fire department,” he said.

“I tried, I just didn’t try hard enough,” Slavin said. He said it would be the district’s decision whether it wants to go forward with any of his suggestions.

England took 266 votes in the race for Board of Water Commissioners, and challenger Sean Preston took 124.

England owns Legacy Insurance Agency, while Preston owns Coverall Law.

“I’m happy,” said England, adding he was happy with the turnout and happy for the district.

England wanted to thank all of the people who helped with the race, texting, making calls and helping get out the vote.

Preston said he was “certainly disappointed, as I was really hoping to serve in that capacity.”

The Board of Water Commissioners is in “great hands,” and he was proud of the turnout, Preston said.

He added there are lots of young families like his investing themselves in Wareham, and the town has a bright future.
