Small team, big names for boy’s tennis

Apr 16, 2024

The Wareham High School Boys Tennis Team may be small by tennis standards, but it’s large by the standards of Wareham, said Head Coach Evan Wilga.

The team is fielding ten boys this season, up from eight the year before.

This year’s players  are on the younger side, which gives Wilga hope for future years but tempered expectations for the moment, he said.

Wilga said he hopes that the team will pick up six to eight wins this year. With one win under its belt so far, the team has already surpassed its last season’s total.

He’s not looking for a playoff spot, but is looking for students to continue to work on their own game, and feel good about their work, he said.

Helping keep the team’s spirits up are the nicknames the players bear, such as “Ladies’ Man” and “Take it Easy”.

The nicknames were something the previous coach before him did, and he kept up when he joined, Wilga said.

The kids have a lot of leeway in choosing their own names, and they seem to like it, said Wilga. He thinks it brings a bit of quirkiness to tennis that he appreciates.
