Draft of wastewater management plan to receive hearing

Apr 23, 2024

A draft of a comprehensive wastewater management plan for Wareham’s town sewer is nearing completion, one of a number of steps the town’s sewer department needs to take to address its issues with capacity.

The public will get to weigh in on the draft document during an open meeting on Thursday, May 9. It will take place at 6:30 p.m. in Room 320 at the Multi Service Center, 48 Marion Road.

A comprehensive wastewater management plan will lay out the issues with the current state of the sewer system and the impacts that state has on the town, said Chair of the Board of Sewer Commissioners Bernie Pigeon.

The plan is a federal requirement and must be updated every 20 years, said Pigeon; the last plan was completed in 2002.

“It will readily identify the problems that we’re currently working on,” said Pigeon.

Consulting firm GHD, a regular partner with the Sewer Commission, has been working on the plan for the past year and a half.

GHD consultant Marc Drainville has previously stated it will address the town’s issues with nitrogen contamination and how the town’s wastewater treatment plant will accommodate for growth in the town over the next 20 years.

Pigeon said while the draft plan likely will not be available for public review before the meeting, residents can attend and give their input on the plan.

Once it is finalized, there will be another presentation covering the final version at a to-be-determined time.
