Wareham School Committee Chair Judy Caporiccio received a warm farewell on Wednesday as she will not seek reelection in the April 3 town election.

In February, Caporiccio said she would not seek a second, three-year term on the committee, citing a desire to spend time with family. Vice Chair Geoff Swett praised Caporiccio for her hard work.

“I have seen an unusual level of dedication and preparation for the job she has done for the people of Wareham,” said Swett. “I speak for all of our colleagues and School Committee members when I say this is a major ‘thank you’ for a job really well done.”

Caporiccio said she was impressed with administrators and teachers who provided the best education possible under difficult circumstances. The district is currently struggling with a $2 million budget shortfall for next year.

“Even with our dwindling resources, people get more resourceful and more creative,” said Caporiccio. “I’m so grateful for what the teachers do here.”

At the end of the meeting, she took issue with online detractors, saying comments made on social media were spreading misinformation. Caporiccio implored residents to contact committee members directly with concerns.

"Keep informed," she said. "Reach out to the people on the School Committee who have the information and can give you the correct answers."

Even though she’s stepping away from the committee, Caporiccio said she plans to stay active in town. She’s involved with the Boys & Girls Club of Wareham and serves on the Beach and Tourism Committee and the School Building Committee.

Caporiccio called on everyone to take pride in Wareham Public Schools.

“I think we’re second to none,” she said. “Don’t let anyone put you down Wareham. You are great.”
