Wareham Police: Loaded handgun recovered after OUI crash

Authorities on May 16 confiscated a loaded handgun after it was tossed into the woods following an OUI crash, Wareham Police said.

The crash occurred at approximately 9:15 p.m. near 23 Onset Ave. Witnesses said one of the drivers, Christopher Ardita, 45, of Bourne, struck another car after crossing the center line, left the scene and ran into the woods. He returned before police arrived.

Police said Ardita appeared intoxicated and was arrested. Officers then searched the woods and found a loaded handgun registered to Ardita. He was taken to the Wareham Police Department for processing.

Ardita was charged with the following: operating under the influence of alcohol, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, marked lanes violation, improper storage of a firearm and carrying a firearm while intoxicated.

Nothing too spectacular.  He may have been better off just hiding it under the seat.
