The Wareham High School girls tennis team is headed to the state tournament after defeating Dighton-Rehoboth 4-1. According to Coach Geoff Swett, this will be the first time in nearly 20 years the Lady Vikings have qualified.

“I’ve been coach for fourteen years and we’ve never made it,” Swett said after Wednesday’s victory. “I’m just so proud of these girls and the way they play.”

Swett said he wasn't sure what to expect next, but anticipates he'll know the team’s first tournament opponent by June 1.

“It's hard to say how we’ll do until we know the teams,” Swett said. “But I have a really good feeling about us.”

The excitement was tangible among members of the team as they rushed off the court to celebrate.

“I’m kind of nervous,” said Lucy Sullivan. “But if we've made it this far, I think we can keep going.”

Hugs and high-fives were shared all around, and a usually stoic Swett had some heartfelt words to share.

“It's not excitement that I'm feeling,” Swett said. “It's something more like fulfillment. These girls have a sport for life now, and whether we win or lose at state, I'm just glad that I get to be a part of that.”

The team’s overall record for the season is now 10-9. The team’s South Coast Conference record is 4-9.

These girls are doing great!  Success story after success story!  Definitely something to be proud of!

Now, what's up with that photo?  The hug on the left is nice, but otherwise it's a picture of everybody's back.  Sorta weird. Why not a normal team photo of the coach with these talented kids?

What a wonderful story for all of the team members to tell years and years down the road. Congratulations to Geoff Swett, the spectacular tennis team, and everyone who has cheered and encouraged them along the way.
