On Friday, the Wareham Vikings advanced to the South Division 8 final after dominating Sacred Heart in a 40-8 win at home. Head Coach Bob Lomp credited the team’s success to a potent mix of strength and smarts.

“Some teams relay on power, some on finesse, and we seem to be able to do both,” Lomp said. “We’re physical and we do some misdirection…We keep teams guessing.”

The No. 1 seeded Vikings were in complete control the entire game. No. 5 seeded Sacred Heart’s sole touchdown came with seconds left in the third quarter, followed by a successful 2-point conversion.

“Our offensive scheme really caught them off guard,” said Lomp. “We could call any play we wanted.”

He credited the win in part to a tough non-conference schedule that tested the team during the regular season.

“I think this is where our schedule helped us,” he said. “We played an aggressive, non-league schedule.”

Since joining the team as head coach two years ago, Lomp has led the Vikings to consecutive SCC Small Division titles. Over that time, the team’s record is 16-4.

A big part of the team’s fortunes fall on senior co-captain Isaac Nascimento. On Friday, Nascimento, who is best known as the Vikings star running back, filled in as quarterback. Lomp said Nascimento did not disappoint.

“He can do so many things,” said Lomp.

With the win, the team will play the winner of a Nov. 4 match up between St. John Paul II High School (No. 2 seed) and Millis High School (No. 3 seed). The Vikings take the field again on Nov. 10 at home. Kick-off is at 7 p.m.
