Update: Special Town Meeting Article 2: Fund Parking Program

By OnsetTogether | Apr 22, 2018

Warning: Onset parking restrictions are now in effect until October 31. Parking program financial info available here https://drive.google.com/file/d/1cxZZSipsxCrFKnUaN023ClR5dQEwwQBt/view

We spent $5000.00 on "Gary grievance settlement"?

This article requests that money collected for both parking meter fees and Onset Resident parking stickers transfer for spending in the Parking Programs account. Among other things that fund pays out 25%, up to a maximum of $45,000.00, to the Community Events fund for use of events throughout Wareham. This violates the intent of the Onset Special Parking District legislation. Only Onset residents and their guests pay into the resident sticker fund but the money is disbursed town-wide. The details of these accounts have been requested, and until they are made available to the voters we urge voting no on Article 2.

Onset is part of Wareham. Community events are good for both Onset and Wareham no matter where they are held. I live I Onset and have no problem with the town taking my money and giving it to community events or anything other project the town needs help with.

Onsettogether- You are new to Town and have no idea why the Community Events even get this money. This was a program that created a fund and committee that we approved at Town meeting many years ago. Everyone wanted it then, at Town meeting, so it passed. It was a great concept that still lives on today. And yes, everyone knew the only place that collected parking revenue was Onset. But, many of the events that took place in Wareham, were in Onset, and so Onset did benefit from those dollars. You make it sound like none of those revenues go back to Onset, and by the way, we are an entire community that should be working together. Do some research and see why Town Meeting thought this was a great idea and still is.

Thank you Dr, we collectively did research. The sticker resident parking did not exist when CEC began, and many people do not realize it is all lumped in together with meter parking fees. The funding did not keep up with the changes. State law outlines what Special Parking Districts can fund. The Decree determines what is free and open to the public in Onset in perpetuity and these three things are at odds.

The TA mentioned at town meeting that the money collected from the residents stickers was about $1000.00. Most of the money from Onset comes from the kiosks and parking tickets. By the way guest don't by the passes only residents buy the guest pass to give to their guest.
