READ TO ME! Volunteers needed

By Friends WFL | Sep 05, 2017

The Friends of the Wareham Free Library are strong supporters of early childhood literacy, and what better way to lend a hand than to read to our Head Start students!

Volunteers visit a Head Start classroom twice a month, October through May from 10-11 am at the Cape Cod Child Development Preschool in Onset.

One adult reads aloud to one preschooler for a total of 11 visits.. Why is this important?  In a recent (2015) study through Cincinnati Children's Hospital, researchers determined that reading with children from an early age was strongly correlated with brain activation in areas connected with visual imagery and understanding the meaning of language. Children also expand their vocabularies and learn basic grammar and sentence syntax.

Books are provided. Just show up and read! Dates are Oct. 4 and 18; Nov. 1 and 15; Dec. 6; Jan. 3 and 17; Feb. 7; March 7 and 21; and April 4.
