When cancer strikes, well, you just have to figure it out. No instructions included, says Wareham’s Katie Moulding.

That’s why, for the third consecutive year, Moulding was one of 6,200 cyclists from across the country who participated in the Pan-Mass Challenge. The 112-mile ride from Sturbridge to Provincetown raises millions of dollars for cancer research each summer.

Moulding said she started riding for her husband Chris, who beat cancer three years ago.

“But it’s not just for my husband,” said Moulding. “Cancer hits home for so many people in the community, friends and neighbors.”

Funds that Katie raises will go directly to the Colon & Pancreatic Research Fund through Dr. Brian Wolpin (Chris’ oncologist) and his team.

On Saturday, riders wound their way through Wareham, past the Mouldings, their children and neighbors who cheered on participants all day on Main Street.

Usually, Katie participates in the full, two-day ride, but this year had to settle for a shorter one-day ride due to a scheduling conflict.

“She’s no less committed,” said Chris, who noted Katie is halfway to meeting her $1,500 fundraising goal. Riders have until October to raise the money.

Katie said cheering is a small way the family shows their support for riders and noted she appreciates the thousands of people that line the route when she rides.

“We start in Sturbridge at 5 a.m. and see people with their lawn chairs and coffee,” said Katie. “It’s just constant cheering and cowbells.”
