Heavy rain causes detour on Cranberry Highway

Heavy rains Saturday morning closed a small section of Cranberry Highway in front of the former 99 Restaurant, causing traffic delays.

The National Weather Service placed southeastern Massachusetts under a Hazardous Weather Outlook until Saturday afternoon. The service reported that 1 to 2 inches of rain was possible, which “yields the potential for urban and poor drainage flood issues.”

That section of highway is prone to flooding and has already been closed several times this year due to heavy rain. It was reopened early Saturday afternoon.

Gee,just look around town, at the town owned catch basins, when was the last time they were cleaned out..

These are state basins, I believe the repair is factored into the plan but the State should do something....

The plan to redo the strip

G.B.,I wasn't writing my comment about Rte.28,I was referring to the town owned catch basins..Maintenance is the key to keeping things working properly,it seems that this town doesn't believe in that theory...

Bob, not for nothing (I hate it when someone starts with that saying), it appears that the town's catch basins are ok.  This was the only reported road flood and it was due to the State's drainage not Wareham's.

Btw, flooding at that location is one of the reasons why the 99 moved.  It gets pretty bad and affected their business.

The flooding at that location is nothing "new" its been going on since  Wal-Mart and the shopping center was allowed to expand. Its an example of poor drainage engineering by the developer.

WBTS,Take a ride around the town, and see how the catch basins are fix... By putting SAFETY BARRELS on the catch basins..That's not what I would  call  as Maintenance of the system....

Garry , if it the states catch basins and nothing is being done by them , then shame on TOWN Leaders for not putting the pressure on them to not correct the wrong ... That's just pure laziness to just point a finger and say "that's not my problem ,it's theirs ". You seem smarter than that

Bob, you're right.  I did look around and saw two just this morning.  I guess nobody complains enough about them because everybody knows that complaints fall on deaf ears around here.  It doesn't help that priorities are all screwed up around here as well.  They're talking about $220K for a dog park while the roads and associated infrastructure are crumbling.  Doesn't that sound silly?

Posted by: Garry B. | Jun 26, 2017 22:36

WBTS, they dog park people are going for the Stanton grant that will fund almost the entire build.  They are going for the match which is a fraction of the project and requesting CPC funds to cover the match. They are allowed to apply for CPC which has nothing to do with storm drains and has a criteria guideline.

Swift, by all means voice your concern and make the push to get it fixed.  Tuesday nights 7pm Multiservice building BOS meet.

Garry , as you know I know very well how local government works . Why in Gods name would I miss watching The Deadliest Catch to go to a BOS meeting ...That would be a few hours my life I would never get back . Come on now having Worked for 3 different municipalities since the age of 16 I know the "Game " really well .. Climb the ladder but don't rock the boat or else that pension will go down the drain . Btw I left on my own because I couldn't stand the morons anymore

Gary, I understand.  Different buckets of money pay for different things is how it works.  Here's what that makes me think of.  Say I was broke and my kid needed formula and there were no groceries in the house. Then a birthday card from Aunt Bertha with $100 shows up in the mail box. I then take it and blow it on something frivolous because it was not intended for the family bills because it came from a different bucket. My analogy is intended to be silly...even thought people buy 30 packs, nips, and scratch tickets instead of paying their rent all the time.  But anyways.  I still just have a hard time with it.

Wareham By , you hit the nail right on the head .. I can give you another analogy. No trash pick up on the beach , no money , kids driving around in nice shiny new  pick up trucks ,new construction equipment that's hardly usesd and please don't tell me that's used with " Grant " money .lol
