It was the biggest race yet, with 268 runners and walkers making the Grumpy's 5K Cranberry Harvest Race trek past a lake and cranberry bog harvest on Saturday.

Now in its sixth year, the race honors Robert "Grumpy" Conway, an A.D. Makepeace Company employee who passed away in 2010. The 5K, which winds through the bogs of the A.D. Makepeace Company, benefits the Cranberry Educational Foundation's scholarship fund, gives four scholarships a year to students studying agriculture or environmental issues. Around 70 applicants try for the scholarship each year.

"Participation has increased every year," said Dawna Gauvin, a volunteer at the race and Conway's niece. "It's sentimental to me and it's a great family activity. We have a lot of families who participate."

Runners came from as far as Florida and Texas to take part in the fun, Gauvin said.

Dana Panepinto went to the race with his family for the fifth year.

"This is our favorite race," said Panepinto, of Falmouth. He said his family keeps coming back because of the food and festivities after the race and because of the scenic route the race takes them through.

The event is also intended to raise awareness of how the environment and the community fit together, said Peter Beaton, president of Cranberry Growers Service.

"We're not separate, we have to work together," Beaton said.
