CHATHAM- The Wareham Gatemen open regular season play on the road tonight at 7 p.m. as they take on the Chatham Anglers at Veterans Field.

The Gatemen are coming off an 18-25-1 season which put them fourth in the Western Division. The Gatemen defeated the Falmouth Commodores in the opening round of the playoffs before losing to the Bourne Braves in the Western Division Finals.

As for the Anglers, they are also coming off a fourth place finish of their own. The Anglers were fourth in the Eastern Division and posted a 21-23 record. The Anglers fell to the Orleans Firebirds in the opening round of the playoffs last year.

Veterans Field should be jam-packed tonight for Opening Day as the Anglers led the league in attendance last season. Chatham drew 38,286 total fans last season which was an average of 1,823 fans per game. For comparison, Orleans was second in the league in attendance but still averaged 529 fewer fans per game than the Anglers.

For the Gatemen tonight, right hander Joey Matulovich will be on the mound. Matulovich is from Danville, Calif. and is a rising senior at the University of California. He went 1-1 this past season with a 3.47 ERA in 46.2 innings of work. Just last week, Matulovich was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 20th round.

Opposing Matulovich will be right hander Alek Manoah. Manoah is from Miami, Fla. and is a rising junior at the University of West Virginia. He posted a 4.00 ERA this past season in 54 innings to go along with a 3-5 record.
