The arts took center stage in Wareham High School on May 3 as hundreds of paintings, drawings, sculptures, woodwork and digital pieces were displayed.

The 10th annual Fine Arts Night featured the works of approximately 200 high school students as well as seventh and eighth grade middle school students. One of the show’s organizers, art teacher Amy Dion, credited teachers and students from several departments for a successful evening.

“So many people come together for this each year,” she said, thanking students and teachers from the woodworking, culinary, art, drama and music disciplines. “Students put in so much work knowing their creations will be exhibited.”

Senior Kaylee DeCollibus’ detailed self portrait, a charcoal piece, drew attention. DeCollibus said the assignment had students use photocopier images for inspiration.

In the self portrait, DeCollibus' hands were featured. A difficult thing to draw, she said she's been practicing for the past few years.

“My dad mentioned hands were difficult and I took that as a challenge,” she said.

Senior Kylie Enos explored the 1970s in several pieces. She examined how that time period is viewed today compared to what was going on back then.

“When people think about the 70s, they think of hippies and disco balls,” she said, adding that economic problems had a major influence on the decade.

Students tackled lighter subjects, too. Rileigh Thomas, a senior, used her three cats as muses for a series of watercolor and colored pencil pieces.

“They have so much personality,” she said. “I tried to capture that.”

The night also featured musical performances and a sneak peek of the upcoming production of “The Addams Family,” a musical to be performed by the Wareham Viking Theatre Company.
