The memory of Wareham’s Marie Auld lives on seven years after she passed away from lung cancer as her children prepare for another fundraiser in Auld’s honor.

Kristen Murphy, Megan Greene and Ken Metivier are again preparing to help out Damien’s Food Pantry by asking for donations of pasta, which the siblings will collect in the days leading up to the “Walk for Marie,” set for Saturday, Sept. 15, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in New Bedford’s Buttonwood Park Zoo.

Damien’s has received donations from the group in the past, including one year when they unexpectedly collected more than 1,000 jars of peanut butter.

“We set a goal of 500 jars and the donations kept rolling in,” said Metivier. “We hope to collect 1,000 boxes of pasta this year to help out Damien’s.”

Last year, they collected over 600 winter coats, which were donated to Turning Point, a Wareham-based nonprofit that provides services for the homeless and near homeless. The year prior, they collected school supplies and donated 1,200 items, including pens, pencils, notebooks and more to Wareham Public Schools.

The upcoming walk is free and open to all. Refreshments and T-shirts will be given away to participants. Metivier said there’s been between 80 to 100 people participating annually, adding that he hopes it continues to grow.

He and his sisters said they’ll continue with their homegrown fundraiser as long as they’re able to.

“We’re going to keep going as strong as we can each year,” he said.

Anyone interested in donating items or benefiting from a future drive can reach Metivier at 508-816-9393, Greene at 508-889-5923, 508-291-5022 or Jeannette Johnson at 781-336-8917.

Donations of pasta can also be dropped off at Bladez Hair Salon, located at 245 High St., Wareham. For more information on the walk, visit the “Walk for Marie” event page on Facebook.
