Nine-year-old Rebecca Tamburrini of Wareham casted off during her first Wankinquoah Rod and Gun Club Fishing Derby on June 4.

From the shore of Tihonet Pond at A.D. Makepeace headquarters, Rebecca joined roughly 200 other anglers for the long-running derby, now in its 68th year.

According to Rebecca’s mom, Renee, she’s following in her older brother’s footsteps, who participated in the event years ago.

“We love coming here,” said Renee. “It’s just a great day for the family.”

Shawn Clark, a Rod and Gun Club member who led the event, agreed.

“We couldn’t ask for a better day,” said Clark. “This is all about families coming together and having fun.”

The event serves as a fundraiser for the club’s youth group. Members are known as associates and participate in a number of activities, including archery, fishing, hunting and target practice.

One associate, Philip Haskell, spent Sunday and Saturday volunteering.

“This is one of my most favorite times of year,” said Philip. “Me and the other volunteers came down yesterday and made sure everything was squared away and made sure everything ran smoothly today.”

Clark said he appreciated the efforts of all the volunteers.

“We couldn’t possibly do this without them,” said Clark.

Registration started at 4:30 a.m. and anglers could fish from the shore or boat until 1:30 p.m. Prizes were given to those who caught the largest fish at the end of the day.

In the adult bass category, first place went to Trevor Moss for his 3 pound, 14 ounce catch.

In the junior bass category, first place went to Ryan Souza for his 2 pound, 14 ounce catch.

A complete list of winners will be posted when available.
