A school crossing guard was struck Tuesday morning near the intersection of Marion Road and Viking Drive then taken to Rhode Island Hospital.

At approximately 7 a.m. the school crossing guard, a 59-year-old woman, was hit by a car driven by a 76-year-old Wareham man. The man remained at the scene and reported the incident to responding officers.

The woman reported non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

Wareham Police closed the road briefly following the crash. Investigation of this incident is ongoing.

I hope the coward who just drove away comes forward. How do you just run someone over and not even stop? She does a great job out there every day rain or shine. Prayers for her speedy recovery!

Peaches, I agree with your passion.  I drive in and out of the school every morning and she is great. I feel real bad and hope she recovers quickly and is fine.

Please re-read the article.

She was hit which is bad, however she was not "run over" as you stated.

The driver did not drive away as you stated either.

The man remained at the scene and reported the incident to responding officers.

Initially is was reported as a hit and run. That information has since changed.

Hello Peaches,

With breaking news it's difficult to get the full story as it's happening, but we do our best to post what we know, when we know it and ensure that information is accurate. In this case, we did receive more information from police after the first post. But it was never reported as a hit-and-run.

Matthew, not here.....some where else. I was there this morning. I've heard conflicting stories about the vehicle. I just hope this poor woman is ok.

The rumor mill can churn really fast.  I can only imagine what was going around the High School, Middle School, Town Hall, & Multi-Service Building today!  The only people that know what really happened are the crossing guard herself, the man that hit her, and the immediate witnesses.  I'm sure they'll work it out.

The good news is that I heard from a reliable source tonight that she is home.
