When Steve Beranger, owner of Stevie B’s in Onset, developed cancer last year he only told a few people. For strength, he looked to his nephew, 11-year-old Jacob Westgate. At the age of 3, he was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer.

“He’s been through so much pain in his life,” said Beranger, who successfully underwent surgery for his cancer. “Seeing the little guy keep going gave me strength and it’s because of him I pulled through.”

Beranger spoke on May 5 during the ninth annual Jacob’s Motorcycle Run and Benefit. The event featured approximately 60 bikers who donated money for Jacob’s treatment. He has neuroblastoma, a childhood cancer that forms in the nerve tissue. His treatments have included innumerable blood transfusions, platelet transfusions, radiation treatments, biopsies and surgeries.

“He’s been fighting for his life since the age of three,” said Beranger.

Helping to make the day a success were members of the Iron Trinity, American Rebels, Fire Iron and Reapers Motorcycle Clubs. Bernager credited them and the community as a whole for not only supporting this personal cause, but also many other charitable events hosted at Stevie B’s throughout the year.

“This is a beautiful community with great people,” he said. “I’m from South Boston and it’s a pleasure to be down here.”

The event featured food, a raffle with prizes donated from area businesses and three live bands.

The run itself went smoothly, said Brian Simmons, president of the Iron Trinity Motorcycle Club. Simmons offered special thanks to Wareham Police for their help along the route.

This little boy, Jacob, is blessed to have a great Wareham and surrounding communities, helping his cause. I cant believe he is already 11 years old, how time flies. Can't say enough about his uncle Steve Beringer, no matter what the cause or tragedy, whether it be illness, fire, deaths, Steve always has been willing to open his doors, to run benefits, most of the time not taking any money for the food, getting his patrons and others to donate special raffle prizes etc. Thanks Steve. And all your friends are praying for you in your time of need now as well, just like you are there for all of us.
