Wareham residents might be getting a bit of deja vu as the high school boys basketball team continues to dominate the Division Four tournament — its latest win being the defeat of Maimonides School, 79-51, on Tuesday, March 5.

Last March, the team celebrated its first state champion win in over a decade and moving on to the round of eight puts them one step closer to repeating history.

Leading up to the game, Head Coach Steve Faniel said he was excited.

“We’ve been preparing for this all year,” Faniel said. “It’s just another step we set for ourselves — another part of the journey. So we’re excited and we’re going to put our best foot forward.”

And that they did as the packed gymnasium was not disappointed with the Vikings’ performance on Tuesday night.

As the team progresses in the tournament, Faniel said there are nerves, but he views it as beneficial.

“We try to put that nervous energy into positive energy on the court,” he said.

Wareham will next face the winner of the Georgetown High School versus Lynn Vocational Technical Institute game, which is unknown as of press time.

Faniel said the team will continue to focus on the “littles things” and getting better every day.

He added, “[We’re] preparing ourselves to put our best foot forward.”
