Recycling center to change name in honor of late volunteer

The Wareham Recycling Drop-off Center will now be known as the John B. Dixon Recycling Drop-off Center, in memory of one of the center's founders.

Dixon, known to many as Jack, died February 1 at age 88. In addition to the many volunteer hours he dedicated to the recycling center, Dixon served the community as a herring agent for several years.

The Board of Selectmen approved the name change, requested by the town's Recycling Committee, at its meeting on Tuesday.

"I think it's a great idea," Selectman Judith Whiteside told Recycling Coordinator Marilyn Russell and longtime volunteer Earl Russell, who spoke on behalf of the committee. "I can't imagine the years and hours that he spent, as you all did, of course."

The board also appointed Earl Russell to another three-year term on the Recycling Committee.

The Recycling Drop-off Center is located on Plymouth Road, off of Maple Springs Road in East Wareham. It is open on Wednesdays from 1 to 3 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

In addition to plastic, paper, glass, cardboard, tin, and aluminum, the center accepts fluorescent light bulbs, thermometers, rechargeable batteries, sharps, books, and used clothing free of charge.

The center will recycle the following for a fee: tires, lead core batteries, appliances, TVs and monitors up to 27 inches, computers and electronics, and paint (from May through September).

Checked out the website link and would like to make a suggestion. On the website there currently is not an  "Items Accepted at Recycle Center" option to select. Eventually after trying a few options I found a list through an option titled "Recycling News Letter 2016." First time visitors to the website who have not read this article and are seeking "Accepted Items" information might find the information more easily if an "Items Accepted at Recycle Center"  option was made available.
