Adams: Short Ride in a Fast Machine

John Adams’s Short Ride in a Fast Machine begins with a hypnotic repeated pattern. But, as if something in the electric circuits went wrong, the pattern is broken and turns into an ecstatic outburst. It develops into a fanfare with huge melodic leaps. The American musical fingerprint is unmistakable, as is the influence of Copland’s great Fanfare for the Common Man.

Rachmaninoff: Piano Concerto No. 4

Featuring Yakov Kasman

Although the composer is Russian, the music is still very much American. Rachmaninoff’s Fourth Piano Concerto, perhaps the most original of the four, was largely written in America. Still Russian at heart, the piece is greatly influenced by American jazz music, mainly that of George Gershwin and Duke Ellington. This is a rare opportunity to hear this seldom performed, stirring masterpiece.

Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 4

A double nationality hybrid, Rachmaninoff’s piece is the bridge that connects the American and Russian parts of this concert. Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony, the height of Russian Romantic music, incorporates a popular Russian folk song in the last movement. In the hand of Tchaikovsky, this simple melody turns into a horrifying nightmare. The piece is a stormy journey of the tormented composer dealing with his own identity. Tchaikovsky does so in his own personal way, integrating irresistible melodies, waltzes, desperate and emotional climaxes, ballet music, and a triumphal optimistic ending.
